  • I.D. d / O.D. D - inner and outer diameter of the cone.
  • Thickness t - material thickness, which dominates the spring force.
  • Free height h₀ - the overall height of the unloaded cone.
  • Travel to flat - h₀ − t, the theoretical deflection from free to fully flat. Keep working deflection to roughly 75% of this.

  • Parallel (nested, >>>): loads add, deflection stays the same → use for more force.
  • Combination: parallel packs arranged in series tune both - the standard way to hit a target spring rate.

  • Guide every stack on a bolt, rod, or sleeve - unguided stacks buckle sideways.
  • Do not run disc springs flat in service; staying within about 75% of travel preserves fatigue life.

What disc spring fits an M10 bolt?

The 10 mm row in the chart: inner diameter 10.2 mm, outer diameter 20 mm, thickness 1.1 mm, free height 1.55 mm - giving 0.45 mm of travel to flat per spring. Stack in series (alternating orientation) if the joint needs more deflection than one spring provides.

What is the difference between series and parallel stacking?

Series stacking (springs alternating in orientation, like <><>) multiplies deflection while load capacity stays that of one spring. Parallel stacking (springs nested the same way, like >>>) multiplies load while deflection stays the same. Combining both - parallel packs stacked in series - tunes any load-deflection characteristic in between.

How much can a disc spring be compressed?

The theoretical travel is free height minus thickness (the chart’s last column), but a disc spring should not be flattened completely in service. As a widely used rule of thumb, limit working deflection to about 75% of the travel to flat - running springs flat causes rapid fatigue failure and loss of spring force.

When should I use a disc spring instead of a coil spring or spring washer?

Choose a disc spring when you need very high force in very little axial space, or a precisely tunable spring rate via stacking - flange bolting under thermal cycling, valve actuators, clutch packs, and bearing preload at high loads. A helical spring washer is a light-duty locking aid, not a controlled-force spring; a coil spring needs far more space for the same load.
