External Circlip (Shaft Ring)
Ex-stock Mumbai · Custom sizes: 5–7 days
External circlips are stamped from spring steel strip and seat in a precision groove on the outside of a shaft, providing a positive stop for axially loaded components such as bearings, bushes, and gears. The angled ears allow installation and removal with standard circlip pliers. Available in phosphated spring steel and stainless steel grades for corrosive environments.

Internal Circlip (Bore Ring)
Ex-stock Mumbai · Custom sizes: 5–7 days
Internal circlips seat in a groove machined inside a bore, retaining shafts, bearings, and other components from moving axially out of the housing. The inverted ear configuration requires internal circlip pliers for installation and removal. They are the standard solution for retaining rolling element bearings in blind housings across automotive, pump, and gearbox applications.

E-Clips (Pushnut Retaining Ring)
Ex-stock Mumbai · Custom sizes: 5–7 days
E-clips are stamped from flat spring steel strip in a characteristic E-shape with three prongs that grip the shaft groove. Unlike standard circlips, they can be installed by pressing sideways onto the shaft groove without circlip pliers — making them ideal for high-volume production and assemblies where tool access is limited. The three-pronged contact provides a secure hold under moderate axial loads.
| Standards | DIN 6799 |
|---|---|
| Material | Carbon Spring Steel, SS 304 |
| Shaft Diameter | Ø1.5 mm – Ø38 mm |
| Installation | Lateral push-on (no pliers required) |
| Prongs | 3-pronged grip |
| Finish | Self-colour / Zinc plated |
Common Applications
- Consumer Appliances
- Electronics & Instruments
- Hinges & Pivot Pins
- Toy & Sporting Equipment
- High-volume Assemblies

C-Clips (Wire Snap Ring)
Ex-stock Mumbai · Custom sizes: 5–7 days
C-clips are formed from round-section spring steel wire into a C-shape, providing a lightweight and low-profile retention solution for small-diameter shafts. Like E-clips, they are installed laterally onto a groove without circlip pliers. Their round wire cross-section concentrates stress at the groove contact point, making them best suited for light axial loads and precision instrument applications where weight is critical.
| Standards | DIN 6799 (wire form variant) |
|---|---|
| Material | Carbon Spring Steel wire, SS 304 |
| Shaft Diameter | Ø1.5 mm – Ø38 mm |

Stainless Steel Circlip
Ex-stock Mumbai · Custom sizes: 5–7 days
Available as external (shaft) and internal (bore) types in AISI 304 and AISI 316 stainless steel, these circlips are purpose-built for applications where standard phosphated spring steel would corrode. SS 316 (marine grade) offers superior resistance to chlorides and is commonly specified for offshore, food-processing, and pharmaceutical equipment. Spring properties are maintained through careful heat treatment of the stainless strip.
| Standards | DIN 471 (external), DIN 472 (internal) |
|---|---|
| Material | SS 304 (AISI 304), SS 316 (AISI 316) |
| Diameter Range | Ø3 mm – Ø150 mm |
| Types | External (shaft) & Internal (bore) |
| Corrosion Resistance | SS 304: good; SS 316: marine grade |
| Finish | Bright (no additional coating) |

Common Questions
Circlip FAQ
What is a circlip and what is it used for?
A circlip (also called a snap ring or retaining ring) is a stamped spring-steel fastener that snaps into a groove on a shaft or bore to prevent axial movement of assembled components. They are widely used in gearboxes, motors, pumps, automotive assemblies, and consumer appliances.
What is the difference between DIN 471 and DIN 472 circlips?
DIN 471 refers to external circlips (shaft rings) that seat in a groove on the outside of a shaft. DIN 472 refers to internal circlips (bore rings) that seat inside a groove machined into a bore or housing. Both are available from Ø8mm to Ø300mm. External types start from Ø3mm.
What is the difference between an E-clip and a C-clip?
Both snap on laterally without pliers. E-clips are stamped from flat strip with three prongs giving higher axial load capacity. C-clips are bent from round wire, making them lighter — best for precision instruments and very small shafts where low axial loads are expected.
Do you supply stainless steel circlips?
Yes. We supply external and internal circlips in SS 304 and SS 316 from Ø3mm to Ø150mm. SS 316 is recommended for marine, food processing, pharmaceutical, and chemical environments due to its superior chloride resistance.
What size range of circlips do you stock?
External circlips (DIN 471): Ø3mm – Ø300mm. Internal circlips (DIN 472): Ø8mm – Ø300mm. E-clips and C-clips: Ø1.5mm – Ø38mm. Stainless steel: Ø3mm – Ø150mm. Most standard sizes are stocked ex-Mumbai for immediate dispatch.
Can I get circlips in non-standard sizes?
Yes. Non-standard diameters and thicknesses can be sourced or manufactured on request. Contact us with your drawing or specification and we will confirm availability and pricing. Minimum order quantities apply for custom sizes.
